Fortune-telling using Japanese-born Hanafuda (Japanese playing cards) Hanafuda (Japanese playing cards) are decorated with seasonal flowers and trees such as plum blossoms, cherry blossoms, wisteria, bush clovers, and willows. They are well known as playing cards for games such as "Koi Koi" and "Hana Matching. The history of hanafuda dates back to the 17th century. In the Azuchi-Momoyama period, "karuta" (Portuguese for "cards") was introduced from Portugal, and card games were introduced to Japan for the first time. 1760s, with the improvement of printing technology, "hanafuda" became widely popular among the general public. The predecessor of "Hanafuda" (Japanese playing cards), called "Hanamiawase Karuta," was invented during the Edo period (1603-1868) by a chabosha in a castle, and quickly became well known to many people. With the improvement of printing technology, "Hanafuda" became popular among the common people, and was also loved by the glamorous and wealthy people in the Karyukai and merchant circles. The beautiful and scenic designs depict seasonal events such as cherry blossom viewing and sake cups celebrating seasonal festivals, and give us a glimpse into the extravagant tastes of the upper class. Hanafuda fortune-telling, which once captivated prostitutes, was used to divine dizzying love affairs, and is a traditional divination technique filled with the emotion and spirit of the Japanese people. The history of "Hanafuda Fortune-Telling" was mostly lost during the war, but the author has reconstructed it based on the few descriptions that remain in various documents, and this "Hanafuda Fortune-Telling Cards - Snow, Moon, and Flower" was born as a fresh, modern version while inheriting the tradition. This "Hanafuda Fortune-Telling Card - Snow, Moon, and Flowers" is made with the same structure as the original Hanafuda. The original composition of the traditional Hanafuda picture is kept, but the design is more pop and vivid, and even those who are not familiar with Hanafuda can easily handle the modern design.
