The Jodo-shu sect, founded by Honen Shonin, taught that one can enter the Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss in the next life by single-mindedly reciting the Nembutsu (the recitation of the Buddha's name). Shinran Shonin clarified the content of the Nembutsu, and established Jodo Shinshu, which states that "it is important to believe in and receive the great compassion of Amida Buddha. This oracle card contains the teachings of Jodo Shinshu as taught by Shinran Shonin in 48 cards. These cards are named after the 48 wishes vowed by Bodhisattva Hozo, the predecessor of Amida Buddha.
