Egyptian Tarot – The “Fourth Tradition”

Alongside the Rider, Marseille, and Thoth decks, the Egyptian Tarot is often called the “fourth tarot.”

The term “Egyptian Tarot” refers to a current of tarot that emerged in late 18th-century France, closely tied to the idea that “ancient Egypt held secret wisdom.” At the time, it created a powerful movement.

With illustrations inspired by Egyptian mythology and symbolism, hieroglyphs, and designs reminiscent of Egyptian art, these decks have fascinated tarot readers for more than 200 years.

Despite its long history—older than the Rider deck—the Egyptian Tarot remains less recognized today. Many assume it is simply “tarot with Egyptian-style artwork,” which unfortunately overlooks its deeper tradition and unique method of use.

This deck revives the authentic tradition of Egyptian Tarot, based on 20 years of study and practice by the author. Faithfully rooted in its French origins, it has been newly created as an original 78-card deck (22 Major Arcana, 56 Minor Arcana).

Key Features

Created by a Japanese researcher – no confusing translations; unique Egyptian Tarot terminology is presented clearly.

Major Arcana (22 cards): includes a keyword reference sheet for quick meanings. (Note: Using Rider or Marseille interpretations reduces the true value of Egyptian Tarot.)

Minor Arcana (56 cards): each card includes meanings directly printed, with both upright-only and upright/reversed systems.

Additional symbols: astrological glyphs, numbers, and letters are integrated into each card for intuitive reading—no need to memorize or constantly look up references.

Design for clarity: Major Arcana use pure white backgrounds; each Minor Arcana suit features its own vibrant color palette, making readings more intuitive and enhancing visual appeal for photos and social media.

Unlike the “standard” Rider, Marseille, or Thoth decks, the Egyptian Tarot offers a fresh depth of wisdom. It can be enjoyed by beginners and professionals alike, but is especially recommended if you:

Want to explore beyond Rider, Marseille, or Thoth decks

Wish to deepen your tarot practice

Are drawn to ancient Egyptian civilization

Seek to incorporate new divinatory methods

The Egyptian Tarot, with its 200+ years of tradition, stands as the “fourth tarot.” This deck allows you to fully experience its hidden wisdom and timeless beauty.

For deeper study, we recommend the companion book “The World of Egyptian Tarot” (Seiko Kuroda, Toyo Shoin), which explores the symbols and traditions behind this deck in greater detail.
